On Saturday at The Dock Arts Centre in Carrick on Shannon, Co.Leitrim I made one of mu biggest drawings to date. On a 7 foot square free standing drawing board I made a series of portraits of members of the public visiting the gallery. The sitters posed for about 15-20 minutes each and the composition of the work was dictated by how many people were up for posing. My aim was to echo the multi figure compositions of Frans Hals, with everyone in the picture being presented equally. The work was completed in 4 hours. The drawing was in experiment in drawings as performance, and portraiture as a kind of socially engaged practice, and in a way, follows on from the Andy parsons Project where I made oil paintings of volunteer sitters over a three month period in a disused shop in Sligo Town centre.
